  50.         Skip writes that in his search for pirate operators he has had the
  51.         dubious honor of logging about 10 numbers stations for every
  52.         pirate he has heard.  The rapid cadence Spanish stations he has   
  53.         logged are intriguing - not something I have heard myself.  Anybody
  54.         else noticed this format?

  59.         . That wiretapping was practiced by both the Union and
  60.           Confederate armies?  During the infamous "March to the Sea"
  61.           when General William Tecumseh Sherman cut a swath a hundred
  62.           miles wide through the Georgia countryside he was being
  63.           monitored in a very interesting way.  Confederate forces
  64.           tapped telegraph lines carrying messages from the front to
  65.           the rear areas.  They were able to obtain plenty of valuable
  66.           information regarding forces operating behind Sherman, as
  67.           well as cavalry movement and ration shipments.

  69.         . That the Marconi Conference Center and State Historic Park
  70.           near Marshall, CA is on a site constructed by the Marconi
  71.           Wireless Company in 1913, as a trans-Pacific receiving
  72.           station?  The original site was over 1000 acres in size.
  73.           a large parcel of land was necessary because of the *MILE*
  74.           *LONG* receiving antenna which was supported by seven 270
  75.           foot steel towers.

  85.       I just finished listening (2-28-91) to a station I heard once
  86.       or twice before, but not in its entirety.  On 7413 at about 0310
  87.       a carrier was noted... I tuned it zero beat on 7413.  At 0320, 
  88.       "they" started playing random tone sequences.  These were electrically
  89.       generated single frequency tones.  About halfway thru the transmission,
  90.       a tone was 'held' for about 10 seconds, then the random sequence of
  91.       tones started again, except that the pace of the tones was doubled. 
  92.       At 0328, a tone was 'held for about 10 seconds and the carrier was
  93.       dropped immediately.

  95.       I've heard this once before but did not log it. I am certain that it
  96.       was not a pirate, (the transmission of a long 'marker' carrier is not
  97.       usually done... Hope R occasionally warms up the PA with a blast of
  98.       carrier, but not for 10 minutes.!

  100.       There was no voice audio at all. By 'random tones' I mean no
  101.       apparent pattern.... there probably IS some pattern, but not to the
  102.       untrained ear.

  104.       Another one of those "bump in the night" transmissions that
  105.       mean something to SOMEBODY!
